Terry O’Neill (1938–2019) was one of Britain’s most celebrated photographers, renowned for his candid portraits of the world’s most influential musicians, actors, political figures, and cultural icons. His distinctive ability to capture natural, unguarded moments helped redefine celebrity photography and established him as one of the most important visual chroniclers of the twentieth century.

O’Neill began his career as a photographer at London’s Daily Sketch, where his talent for documenting public figures with authenticity and ease quickly gained recognition. During the 1960s, he photographed many of the era’s defining personalities, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Brigitte Bardot, Elton John, David Bowie, Audrey Hepburn, Raquel Welch, and members of the British Royal Family.

Among his most celebrated works are his intimate photographs of actress Faye Dunaway, including the iconic image captured the morning after she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1977. His photographs became synonymous with the glamour, energy, and cultural transformation of the 1960s and beyond, helping to define the visual identity of London’s “Swinging Sixties” alongside fellow photographers David Bailey, Terence Donovan, and Patrick Lichfield.

Throughout his distinguished career, O’Neill’s photographs appeared in leading international publications and have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. In 2011, he was awarded the Royal Photographic Society’s prestigious Centenary Medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the art of photography.
